Scholarships
Along with its direct activities, CCJP engages in outreach and empowerment by providing scholarships to aid individuals to participate in events and training that further CCJP’s mission.
Established in 2007, the Dora Turner Scholarship honors Franklin County civil rights activist and long-time CCJP member Dora Turner, a leader in the 1960s battle to integrate the Franklin County Schools. Preference is given to applicants enrolled in the Franklin County School system to attend programs which groom student leaders to promote racial justice and equality.
CCJP also awards scholarships in other areas as describe in the guidelines (see below).
Past scholarship recipients include:
Recipient: Sequatchie Valley Institute at Moonshadow
Amount awarded: $100.00
The award was made to fund scholarships for the “Food for Life” workshop which gives instruction on organic gardening, food preservation, medicines and nutrition as well as discussion on the social and ecological implications of industrial agriculture.
Recipient: The Lion and Lamb Project
Amount awarded: $1000.00
Funding was awarded for scholarships to attend the Lion and Lamb Project trainer’s seminar. Attendees learned skills which enabled them to host community workshops to help parents understand how violence is marketed as entertainment to children and what they can do to protect their children from these media messages.
Recipient: Andrea Taylor
Amount awarded: $300
Franklin County High School junior Andrea Taylor was awarded a Dora Turner Scholarship, making it possible for her to attend Camp Anytown, a week-long human relations and leadership program for high school students, dedicated to fighting bias, bigotry, and racism and creating a more just and inclusive society.
Guidelines for Awarding Scholarships
- Priority shall be given to scholarship applications that contribute to the advancement of justice and peace.
- That is, social, political, and economic justice, for the elimination of poverty, the elimination of discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual preference, and other forms of discrimination, the overcoming of oppression, and the helping of people to discover and exercise their power.
- That is, the advancement of the cause of peace (with justice) in terms of reconciliation, but also in relation to non-violent protest and other action against those who promote war and other forms of unjust conflict.
- Given our commitment to thinking globally and acting locally, priority shall be given to scholarship applicants from the Cumberland Plateau region of Tennessee. This does not preclude consideration of applicants from other areas.
- Priority shall be given to scholarship applicants who can be helped toward the achievement of goals by relatively small financial backing, with prospects for more substantial funding from other sources. Please note that CCJP typically awards scholarships at or under $500.
- Priority shall be given to scholarship applicants that, in the opinion of the Outreach and Support Committee and the Board, appear to be committed to and capable of fulfilling the conditions of item #1 above.
- Priority shall ordinarily be given to scholarship applicants whose experience will benefit grass-roots initiatives or organizations, especially those with significant volunteer involvement.
- We will fund scholarships for programs administered by faith-based organizations as long as they are outreach programs and not proselytizing programs.
Scholarship applications will ordinarily be acted upon by the Board of the Cumberland Center at its regular meetings on the first Saturdays of March and September, or the first Fridays of June and December. In order that the Outreach and Support Committee may review applications before Board action, applications should be submitted one month prior to the quarterly regular Board meetings.
If you have questions or need help with filling out the application, contact Leslie Lytle at sllytle@blomand.net or (931) 598-9979.
