Peace Pole at Sewanee Elementary School

Three New Languages for Peace Pole on September 24

The third annual dedication of the CCJP-Sewanee Elementary School peace pole will be held at 8:00 AM on Friday, September 24.    "May peace prevail on earth" will be expressed on plaques in sign language, Hindi, and German.   CCJP selected (and donated) the sign language plate; a private donor contributed   the German, and the school provided Hindi,   the language selected by the children.   Students will lead the short program on the playground, and many classes will learn to sign "May peace prevail on earth" before the ceremony.   Teresa Brown, SES music teacher, is teaching third graders to sign the song "Peace Like a River."

After this year's program, the peace pole will display Arabic, Cherokee, English, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Icelandic, Japanese, Sign Language, Spanish, and Swahili.   In the weeks before the ceremony, the children will write essays and poetry about peace, help with bulletin boards & displays, and discuss the United Nation's designation of   September 21 as    International Day of Peace.

The program will be short.   Chairs will be provided, and visitors are asked to   park away from school traffic.   Please join us for this moving ceremony which has become a fall highlight for SES children and an important part of their peace education.   In case of rain, we will gather in the school gym.
